what are the limitations of Newland's Octaves? and what are the limitations of Dobreiner's triads?

 Limitations of Dobreiners classification

  1. Dobreiner could identify only three traids from the elements known at that time.

Limitations of new land law of octaves

  1. It was found that law of octaves was aplicable only upto calcium.
  2. It was assumed by Newland that only 56 element existed in nature and no more elements would e discovered in the future

Limitations of Newland's Octaves : 1. It worked well for lighter metals. But it could not be applied to heavier metals.

2.It classified the elements upto Ca ( atomic no. = 20).

3. when the noble gases were discovered, the idea of octaves could not be held.

Limitations of Dobereiner's traids : It could not be applied to all the elements in the form of traid.

 limitations of octaves r

 > newland law was applicable only up to calcium >.the new elements discovered did not have properties as eighth element

>newland adjusted two elements in same slot but also put unlike elements under same note >iron which had similar to cobalt nd nickel has been placed far way from these elements

limitations of doberiener traids r > dobereiner could identify only three traids from elements known at that time

Defects of Law of Octaves

  • This law could be best applied, only up to the element calcium.
  • Newly discovered elements could not fit into the octave structure.
  • The feature of resemblance of the 8th element when arranged in increasing order of their atomic mass was not successful with heavier elements.

Defects of Triad Classification

(i) Quite a large number of similar elements could not be grouped into triads e.g. iron, manganese, nickel, cobalt, zinc and copper are similar elements but cannot be placed in the triads.

(ii) It was possible that quite dissimilar elements could be grouped into triads.

As Dobereiner failed to arrange the then known elements in the form of triads, his classification was not very successful.

j. newlands law of octaves:

when the nobel gases was discovered the idea of octaves couldn't hold i.e with yhe discovery of neon(10 Ne) bw fluorine (9 F) n sodium (11 Na) and discovery of argon (18 Ar) bw chlorine (17 Cl) and potassium (19 K) it becomes the 9th element and not the 8th which has the similar properties.

so that the Newlands law of octaves couldn't put forward.
