Bacteria (plural of bacterium) are microscopic single-celled organisms (prokaryotes) that reproduce by binary fission, i.e. one cell splits into two, the two cells split into four, etc., etc.
They are the most abundant organisms in the world, and most of them are harmless, or even helpful for the human body. In fact, you have more bacteria cells in your body than human cells. Those that live on or in our body are often called our "Natural Flora". There are something like 500 different species living in our bodies. They aid with digestion, produce vitamins, etc.
