What is hepatic portal vein and hepatic portal artery??

Hi,

There exists hepatic portal vein in hepatic portal system but not hepatic portal arteries.

Blood supply to liver is maintained by hepatic arteries and hepatic veins.

The hepatic portal vein is one of the major components of the hepatic portal system. The hepatic portal vein is not considered to be a true vein because it does not directly drain into the heart. It carries blood from the gastrointestinal tract and drain it into the liver. The liver is responsible for the detoxification of the blood before it reaches the other parts of the body.

Hepatic arteries supply oxygenated blood to liver and hepatic veins carry away deoxygenated blood from liver.

The hepatic portal vein is not a true vein, because it does not conduct blood directly to the heart. It is a vessel in the abdominal cavity that drains blood from the gastrointestinal tract and spleen to capillary beds in the liver. It is usually formed by the confluence of the superior mesenteric and splenic veins and also receives blood from the inferior mesenteric, gastric, and cystic veins. The hepatic portal vein is a major component of the hepatic portal system, and it is one of only two portal venous systems in the body. The other is the hypophyseal portal system.
