What is meant by active mass? Why the active mass of pure solid or liquid taken to be 1?

Dear student!Active mass is the molar concentration of the reacting substance which actually participate in the reaction so as,

Active mass = no. of moles/ Volume in L

Actually, when we talk about pure solid or liquid, they exist in reaction only when the equilibrium is present and at the equilibrium condition there is no net change in the concentration of the substances so that the concentration terms become constant and hence it is taken as unity
