what is the function of carrot and radish?
Dear student,
The Carrot or Daucus carota belongs to Family- Apiaceae in the Genus- Daucus. It is considered as a good source of Vitamin A and other compounds such as falcarinol, beta- carotenes, antioxidants and minerals. As carrots are rich in dietary fibre and antioxidants, this will reduce free radicals in the body and hence shows anti-cancer properties. Also Vitamin A and high amount of beta-carortene will help to restore the vision. It also help to improve the immune system and delay the effect of ageing too.
The Radish or Raphanus sativus belongs to Family- Brassicaceae in the Genus- Raphanus. It is considered as a very low calorie root vegetable and is a good source of minerals, vitamins (Vitamin B-6, thiamin riboflavin), anti-oxidants, electrolytes and dietary fibre. In radish, the antioxidant compound named sulforaphane is present which shows anti-cancer properties especially against breast, prostate, ovarian and colon cancers by inhibiting the growth of cancer cells.
