what is the function of carrot and radish?

Dear student,

The Carrot or Daucus carota belongs to Family- Apiaceae in the Genus- Daucus. It is considered as a good source of Vitamin A and other compounds such as falcarinol, beta- carotenes, antioxidants and minerals. As carrots are rich in dietary fibre and antioxidants, this will reduce free radicals in the body and hence shows anti-cancer properties. Also Vitamin A and high amount of beta-carortene will help to restore the vision. It also help to improve the immune system and delay the effect of ageing too.

The Radish or Raphanus sativus belongs to Family- Brassicaceae in the Genus- Raphanus. It is considered as a very low calorie root vegetable and is a good source of minerals, vitamins (Vitamin B-6, thiamin riboflavin), anti-oxidants, electrolytes and dietary fibre. In radish, the antioxidant compound named sulforaphane is present which shows anti-cancer properties especially against breast, prostate, ovarian and colon cancers by inhibiting the growth of cancer cells.

FOR CARROT.
Prevent Cancer
Many studies shown that eating carrots may help lower the risk of breast cancer, lung cancer and colon cancer. Recently, researchers have isolated a compound called falc arinol in carrots that may be largely responsible for anti-cancer benefits.
 Improve Vision
The retina of the eye needs vitamin A to function. A lack of vitamin A can cause night blindness. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, a substance which is converted to vitamin A in the liver. In the retina, vitamin A is transformed into rhodopsin, a purple pigment that necessary for night vision.
FOR RADISH.
  • They are one of very low calorie root vegetables. Fresh root provides just 16 calories per 100 g. Nonetheless; they are a very good source of anti-oxidants, electrolytes, minerals, vitamins and dietary fiber.

  • Fresh roots are good source of vitamin C; provide about 15 mg or 25% of DRI of vitamin C per 100 g. Vitamin-C is a powerful water soluble anti-oxidant required by the body for synthesis of collagen. It helps the body scavenge harmful free radicals, prevention from cancers, inflammation and help boost immunity.

  • In addition, they contain adequate levels of fo lates, vitamin B-6, riboflavin, thiamin and minerals such as iron, magnesium, copper and calcium.
