when an atom becomes negatively charged ion?

An atom, in general, is a neutral entity with equal number of positive (proton) and negative (electron) charges. Since, the protons are fixed within the nucleus an atom will have to accept electron(s) to get negatively charged. This will result in a negatively charged ion.

An atom becomes negatively charged ion when the atom accepts or gains some electrons. Actually, what happens is the when atom gains electrons, no. of electrons in the atom is now more than the no. of protons in the nucleus. In the other words, we can say that the negative charges are more than the positive charge. So ,atom has been converted into the negatively charged ion..
