, much of its forests and wildlife resources are either owned or manged by the government through Forest Department or other Government Departments.

Government's Categorization of Forests:

(i) Reserved Forests: More than half of the total forest land has been declared reserved forests. Reserved forests are regarded as the most valuable , also known as permanent forests they are mainly spread Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, uttrakhand etc.

(ii) Protected Forests: Almost one-third of the total forest area is protected forest and are protected from any further depletion. Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, Odisha, HP have areas under protected forests.They are also referred as permanent forests.

(iii) Unclassed Forests: These are other forests and wastelands belonging to both government, private individuals and communities .North East states and parts of Gujarat have these forests under them.
