why did caesar thrice refuce the crown?

Caesar was not devoid of ambition. Somewhere, he did have the latent desire to become the king of Rome. He refused the crown just to show his humility. However, Brutus and the conspirators thought that Caesar was over ambitious and would turn into a dictator. Hence, he was killed.
