The author felt that Ile Amsterdam was the most beautiful place on earth because it symbolized the triumph of the human spirit for him. In spite of adverse circumstances, the author had managed to bring his family to safety and that barren little place seemed to be a testimony to the quality of endurance exhibited by him and his family in holding on to the hope of survival and never giving up.
