why do a person walking on a rope carries a long stick in his hands ?

Dear Student!

The answer to this question calls for an uderstandng of concepts, the scope of which go much beyond the ambit of the syllabus in your current grade.
The man on rope can fall because of torque on him tends to change his sideway balance which can affect his angular momentum about rope and make him fall. But, by using a long stick he increases his moment of inertia in a way such thathe can resist change in angular momentum in a better way. Thus, he protects himself from falling.

Hope it is clear!
Best wishes!!
