why do some natural resources have to be processed?

Some natural resources have to be processed before using them just because they are not ready to be used in their raw form. IF we use these resources in their simple or raw form we might not be able to extract all of their use or even might waste these resources. Eg- We cant directly write on tree leaves or on wood pulp these have to be processed to create a new item called as paper on which we write.
