Why do you think big trucks have 8 wheels instead of four ?

More wheels increase the area of contact with the road.

We have read that pressure = (Force/Area)

So, by increasing the area, we are in fact reducing the pressure between the wheels and the road. This reduces the wear and tear on the tyres as well as the road.
