why do you think shifting cultivation though destructive is still practised in many parts of the world?

Dear Student,

Shifting cultivation is the type of cultivation in which the farmers cut trees and clear the land for cultivation. They also burn the uprooted trees and mix their ashes in the soil so as to fertile the soil. After cultivation and harvesting they move on to other land and repeat the same process. As nomads they move from place to place for agriculture and for survival. But in this process, there are also chances of hazards like forest fires, and loss of fertility. If it is practiced in many parts of society, it is due to the fact that nomadic societies still exist and they follow the same traditional method of farming.

Shilfting cultivation has its merits and demerits. A patch of forest is cleared for agricultural use then this will be used as the humus for the soil which will gain fertility. In one year or two the soil will loose the fertility. It is then left fallow and now moved to another patch of the forest and do the same things(as written above). After 5-6 years the cultivated land will again turn into forest because of the bacteria present in the nature. It even has the demerits. If a rare plant which is useful for the health of a human is growing a patch of forest and is cleared or burnt for the use of cultivation then the plant will not grow again in the same land .
