Why does an iron nail sink in water but the ship made of iron floats?I am bit confused in what my teacher told me and what my friends. Help please?

A needle sinks in water because the weight of water displaced by it is less than the weight of needle .AND an iron ship is shaped that it can displace a large volume of water. The weight of the water displaced by the immersed portion o the ship is equal to the weight of the ship hence it can float. According to the law of floatation a body floats in a liquid when the weight of the whole body is equal to the weight of the liquid displaced by the immersed portion of the body.

Its because an iron ship is not completely solid. It has full of air filled in it. So the average density of the ship as a whole is less than the density of water. Therefore immersed portion of the ship displaces water equal to its weight. So the ship floats whereas a sheet of iron is compact and there are no air spaces inside it. Iron is denser than that of water. The weight of the sheet is greater than the weight of the water displaced by the sheet. So it sinks....

Actually Ship structure is hollow at the bottom and it is filled of air , so the overall density of the ship become less than the density of water so the ship floats..

And also because iron nail has lesser surface area but ship has greater area than iron nail so the area for applying bouyant force is more in ship . So the ship floats..

Archimedes' principle states that
Weight of liquid displaced = Buoyant force
The weight of the water displaced by the ship is equal to its weight, so it floats. Whereas the weight of the water displaced by the iron nail is less than its weight so the iron nail sinks.

If we place an iron nail on the surface of water,it sinks because the density of iron is greater than that of water,so the weight of the nail is more than the upthrust of water on it.
On the other hand ,ships are also made of iron, but they do not sink, because the ship is hollow and the empty space in it contains air which makes the average density of ship less than that of water.

Iron is more denser than water so, it sinks in water                      [WHEREAS] The ship made out of iron is less denser than water in the sea so, it floats
  • 5
An iron nail sinks because the water displaced by the iron nail is less that of weight of iron nail so it sinks whereas the water displaced by the boat is equal to weight of ship so it gloats
  • 1
this is because the volume of iron nail is very less to float in water as compare to ship.Thats why iron nail sink and ship floats in sea water

WELL THE IRON NAIL SINKS AS IT HEAVIER THAN THE DENSITY OF WATER AND PLUS THE FORCE EXERTED ON IT ALSO CAN BE THE REASON FOR IT >> THE REASON WHY   A SHIP MADE OF RON FLOATS IS CUZE IT HAS A HOLLOW BOTTOM WHICH HELPS IN THE BALANCE OF THE SHIP AND THE PORTION OF THE SHIP IN WATER IS EQUAL TO THE WEIGHT OF THE SHIP >>>    U CAN EVEN TRY FLOATING A PAPER BOAT WHICH ALSO BALANCES THE BOAT

I HOPE DIS WAS HELPFULL ^_^

Iron nail sink in water because the weight of water displaced by it is less than the weight of needle but the weight of water displaced by the iron ship is more than i.e., in a large volume than the weight of iron ship. Also the surface of needle is only a point when it is placed on the surface of water but the surface of iron ship is large when it is placed on water that the force of water given by the water is more on the surface of the iron ship.

Because the density of nail is greater than water but the density of shiP is not greater than water thatswhy the nail sink in water and ship doesn'n.
  • -3
Nail density is less in comparison of the ship
  • -4
Because iron ship have some space around it and which is filled with air.
  • -2

because it is small
  • -5
An iron nail sinks in water as density of iron is greater than water, so the weight of nail is more than the upthrust of water on it
  • 0
This is because the volume of the ship is greater than the volume of iron nail. And as you know that volume is inversely proportional to density, therefore the density of the ship is less than water while the density of iron nail is more than that of water.
  • 0
This is due to the relative density of nail which is greater in comparison of the ship so it sink and ship dives.
  • 0
The reson is because the water displaced by an iron ship is equal and even more then its own weight thus it floats. But in the case of an iron mail because of having very less surface area the weight of water displaced by the iron nail is not equal to its own weight thus an iron nail sinks but an iron ship floats.

Because iron nail has less density

Although it is made of iron and steel which are materials denser than water a ship floats in water. This is due to the fact that a floating ship displaces a weight of water equal to its own weight including that of the cargo. The empty space in the ship contains air, therefore, it's average density is less than the density of water. Thus, a ship floats with a small section under water

all this depends on the weight of the liquid  displaced or the upthrust....if the upthrust is equal to or more than the weight of liquid displaced then the object floats....iron nail sinks cos its denser thgen water and the volume of liquid displaced by it is less...but a ship being hollow is less dense and displaces a lager volume of water which obviously increases the upthrust and thus it floats....i hope this helps:)

As a ship is designed in a hollow shape which displaces less water
  • 1
THE SIMPLE ANSWER OF THIS QUESTION IS THAT THE DENSITY IS MORE THAN OF WATER AND IT HAS SMALL SURFACE AREA WHILE IN CASE OF IRON SHIP THE SURFACE AREA IS MORE AND UPTHRUST WILL ALSO BE MORE ON THE SHIP SO IT FLOATA .I THINK IT WILL BE HELPFUL🤗🤗

A piece of iron sinks in water but a ship made of iron does not sinks because ship has empty space in its bottom and that space is filled with air .the densuty of air is lees than the density of water so it floats
  • 0
Iron nail sinks in water but the ship made of iron floats on water because the ship made of iron has a hollow space inside it which makes it less denser than water. Iron nail sinks in water because the density of iron nail is more than that of water.

An iron nail sinks in water bcoz the densityof iron nail is greater than that of water..whereas an iron ship floats on water bcoz it has greater volume..Greater the volume, lesser is the density.
  • 1
It is all because of surface area.
  • 1
As know that the pressure is equals to the force upon area and area is inversely proportional to the pressure and has been known that the area of the iron nail is very less than and the ship and that's why the pressure of the ship become less that's why it float

As the density of an iron nail is more than that of water, the nail sinks in water.
The weight of the water displaced by the ship is equal to its weight, so it floats.

1st of all neddele weight is found to be more than the displaced water acc to Archimedes principle and in 2nd case it is weight of ship is equal with the displaced liquid weight so it is floating Let W be the weight of object Let W\ be the weight of liguid W>W\ then body will sink W=W\ body will float

Because of its shape

The objects with less density than?water?floats on the?water while?the object that has?not?density?sinks?into the?water. Iron?nails sink in water but?a?ship?made of iron floats. This happens because of the density of the iron?nail?and the?ship. Because of this reason the density is less as compared to?water.

The density of iron is more than the density of water ??

because has mass

Because the density of the ship is less than that of iron nail and water.
Try to understand density=mass/volume

So let's start from what we know. Iron ship floats on water (basically it's on and in both). Law of floatation says that for a static floating body ( static), the resultant force is zero. So there is no net force on the ship. In this case, it's buoyant force (the weight of the water that it displaces) = weight of the ship. So it floats. And for a body to float, it's density need to be less than or equal to water. Here the mass of the ship remains constant but the volume is increased, thus decreasing the density. So the average density of the ship is less than that of water. Since we increased the volume, the volume of water displaced is also increased. And it is increased such that the weight of water displaced is equal to the weight of ship. Thus making It float. There is one more reason for the decrease in averaegedensity of ship. Ship is hollow from inside, that means it's not solid. There is air inside the ship and air is ofcourse less dense than water. So the density of ship is less. Iron nail doesn't floats because of the converse of the above.

Its due to salinity
