Why does the narrator hesitate to be a partner of Laura Hinkle during the Ouija board party?
This is bcoz Helen, the ghost, had asked the narrator to influence his friends to stop using the Ouija board. It was only on this condition that Helen promised to help the narrator to write ghost stories. If Helen sees him now himself trying to communicate ghosts through Ouija board, he fears how and what she would do to him. Laura hinkle was flirtatious woman.

basically, the narrator had had a session with the ghost of helen before and she had told him that she could only help him write the ghost stories if he urged all of his friends to stop using ouija board . he even insisted his ife not to use it when she got the same thing for him but she got angry at him as she got it for him to help him with the ghost stories. when the session took place laura hinkle was the only lady left without a partner. lavinia insisted john to join her during the session. now if he himself starts calling ghosts from that board instead of stopping them from using it will make helen more angry at him. that is was he was reluctant to be her partner.
