why gandhiji supported khilafat movement

gandhiji supported khilafat movement to integrate muslim and hindus in the struggle of freedom

When Gandhiji launched satyagraha movement against Rowlatt  Act(1919) he saw that the movement was limited to towns and cities i.e.it was not a widespread movement. To make it a broad based movement he had to bring muslims and hindus together.so,he supported the muslims in khilafat movement.

Hi,

Here goes the answer to your question

  • After the defeat of Turkey in World War I there were rumours that harsh terms would be imposed in the emperor of Turkey who was also the Khalifa or the spiritual head of the Muslims.
  • The Indian Muslims decided to defend the temporal powers of the Khalifa.
  • Muhammad Ali and Shaukat Ali - two brothers, met Gandhiji who saw this as an opportunity to bring the two communities closer and start a unified national movement.
  • This is how the Khilafat issue became a part of the Nationalist Movement of India.

Hope this helps!

  • Gandhi viewed khilafat as the best opportunity to bring Indian Muslims to the for front of Indian freedom struggle. It was so important in the History of India because for the first time Muslims are also come up against the administration. Gandhi had no other option to integrate Muslims with the national cause. This struggle didn't make communalism in the country. But it was the feeling of being betrayed after Gandhi's immediate suspension of the non co-operation movement which was organised jointly organised with Khilafat movement after Choury Choura incident was the main cause behind that.
