why the active mass of pure solid and pure liquid taken unity ?

In equilibrium reaction, the concentration of solids remain constant no matter how much solid is taken.

 Therefore, by convention, the concentration of solids are taken as unity.

In case, a liquid is present in equilibrium with some gas, by covention, it is taken as unity.
