The Otis family represents that quintessential modern American people. Mr. Otis purchases the Canterville Chase, in spite of being warned about the fact that house is haunted. Even when they encounter the Ghost, instead of being frightened they are completely nonchalant about. Mr. and Mrs. Otis offer him modern remedies to make his life simpler! However, the Ghost represents the traditional British notions. When alive the ghost was the dashing yet brash Sir Simon. His notions are also quite British. He beliefs he can still fit into the armor he would wear as a youth. His efforts had hilarious results. Thus, the mannerisms, the beliefs of the Ghost and the Otis family contradicted each other. Hence, the Ghost and the Otis family represent modern American and traditional British notions, respectively.

Virginia belongs to a family that is overtly mdern. They are not superstitious and are only incredulous about the existence of the Ghost. However, Virginia in spite of belonging to the modern Otis family, follows the Ghost to the hidden chamber. Although, she is afraid, she remains undeterred. There she prays for the Ghost and helps him achieve redemption. Virginia's self-less act is in truth the marriage of traditional and modern notions. She believes the Ghost and follows him regardless of the warnings, which makes her chivalrous in the older sense of the term. Then again her modern notions allow her to the analyze things from a more scientific perspective. However, she believes in the strength of prayers and that ensures her safety. Thus, Virginia is a true representation of the contradicting notions of traditionalism and modernism existing together.

"The Canterville Ghost" is a tale of redemption and the triumph of love over Death. Virginia with her purity and honesty helped the Ghost receive freedom. As she prayed the Angel of Death took pity on the Ghost. This helped him achieve redemption. Wilde' through this self-less act of Virginia tries to imprint on the reader that pity is what makes us human. In order to receive salvation one must have honesty, one must be pure of heart and love selflessly. Virginia exemplifies pity and love and this subsequently provides the tale with such a perfect end.

The Canterville Ghost is a study in contrasts. Wilde takes an American family, places them in a British setting, then, pits one culture against the other. He creates stereotypical characters that represent both (3)England and the United States, and he presents each of these characters as comical figures, satirizing both the unrefined tastes of Americans and the determination of the British to guard their traditions. Sir Simon, the ghost, misunderstands the family just as they misunderstand him, and, by pitting them against each other, Wilde clearly emphasize the culture clash between England and the United States.Wilde tends to reverse situations into their opposites as the Otis family succeed in terrorizing the ghost rather than be terrorized by him. What is more, this ghost story is told not from the perspective of the castle occupants, as in traditional tales, but from the perspective of the ghost, Sir Simon.

Besides the humorous tale, it appears that Wilde also has a message, and he uses fifteen-year-old Virginia to communicate it. Virginia says that the ghost helped her see the significance of life and death.
