2 circles with centres O and O' of radii 3 and 4cm respectively intersect at 2 points P & Q such tht op & o'p ARE TANGENTS 2 THE 2 CIRCLES . fIND THE LENGTH OF THE COMMON CHORD pq.

 ok since at 1st we got the same ans, draw the correct figure as per th data.now,

join o' and o and let them bisect common chord PQ at R which also forms a rt angle at r. find OO' using pythagoreas theorem frm rt angld tr POO' which will be 5 cm. Now suppose oR'=x and oR=5-x.then

Find PR frm trngl's PRO and PRO' using pythagoreas theorem we get:

from tr. PRO:

pr=root10x-x^2-16....(i)

from tr.PRO' :

pr=root16-x^2......(i)

equate them and u'll have the master key(x) that will be 3.2cm.now find pr frm tr.PRO' using pythagoreas and that will b 2.4cm. and then PQ=2PR=4.8cm.  ans..
