A piece of wood weighs 10 g in air .When a heavy piece of metal is suspended below it , the metal being submerged in water. The weight of wood in air plus metal in water is 14 g .the weight when both the wood and metal are submerged in water is 2 g. Find the volume and density of wood.

(i AM NOT ABLE TO SOLVE THE QUESTION AT ALL IS THERE SOME MISSING DATA)

Given that: mass of the wood in air = 10 g or 0.010 kg

Consider the situation when the combine weight of wood in air and metal in water is given :

weight of wood in air + metal in water = 14 g or 0.014 kg

  0.010g + (mig - Bi) = 0.014g ------------(1), where mi is the mass of the metal piece and  Bi is the buoyancy  force acting in upward direction due to metal piece.

Consider the situation when weight of both the wood and metal are submerged in water together:

 weight of wood in water + metal in water = 2 g or 0.002 kg

 (0.010g - Bw) + (mig - Bi) = 0.002g  --------------(2),where Bw is the buoyancy  force acting in upward direction due to wood.

 solving above two equations we'll get:

   Bw = 0.012g

  V ρ g = 0.012g

 ⇒ Volume of the water displaced =

 = 1.2 × 10-5 m3

As,  Volume of the wooden block = Volume of the water displaced

 ∴ Volume of the wooden block = 1.2 × 10-5 m3

Now we have got one part of the question and since density of the wooden block can also be find easily with with the below mentioned formula:

 Density of the wooden block =

  • 4
