An object of mass 2kg is sliding with a constant velocity of 4ms on a frictionless horizontal table. The force required to keep the object moving with same velocity is

Dear Student,

Newton’s 1st law states that a body at rest or uniform motion will continue to be at rest or uniform motion until and unless a net external force acts on it.

Given

  • mass m = 2 kg
  • velocity v = 4 ms-1

As the object is moving with a constant velocity i.e., 4 ms-1 so the acceleration of the object is zero.

a = 0

F= ma
  = 0

according to the inertia property If there is no external force acting on the body, it will remain in its current state, i.e., if it is at rest, it will remain at rest, and if it is in motion, it will remain in motion. Here the friction is opposing the force hence no force is required to keep the object in uniform motion.

Therefore, there is 0N force.
