An object of mass 400g is at rest. Find the direction and magnitude of the frictional force exerted between the object and the surface of the path to make the object move in the direction of east. (g = 9.8ms^2).

The object is moving towards east then we know according to law that all the actions have an equal and opposite reaction.
It means that frictional force is exerting in the west direction.
Force applied by an object = mass × acceleration 
here a = g
Force = 0.4 × 9.8 = 3.92 N
FORCE of friction is in opposite direction = - 3.92 N and towards west .
