Ans 1. In the “The Cutting of My Hair” it is shown how the authorities of Carlisle Indian School refused to treat its students with dignity. The children were treated as animals in a herd, instead of human beings with unique personalities. The author's mother had always taught her to be a fighter in life and never to submit tamely. Though she tried hard to resist the authorities’ attempts from shingling her hair, which symbolised her individuality, she was made helpless by brute force. Thus this failure on her part to keep her uniqueness made the author feel that she had ultimately become one of those little animals being driven by a herder.
Vadai is a tasty fritter-type snack from South India.
Ans 2.
There is nobody to comfort the writer because she was in a school where authorities followed a dictatorial regiment and refused to treat its students as human beings. Being shackled by the strict discipline, she felt deprived of the warmth and freedom of her home.
The writer felt humiliated because she had been taught at home that the cutting and shingling of hair was a symbol of a coward and was usually done to the captured enemy. Among her people, short hair was worn by mourners, and shingled hair by cowards. With the cutting of her hair by the school authorities she felt that she had lost her pride.
