Dear student,

The answers are as follows:

Answer 1: "Going places" is primarily a story about a young girl's imagination. Sophie, being born into a poor working class family, dreams of a wonderful future for herself. She plans opening a boutique, or at least being the manager of one; or even of becoming an actress. She dreamt about the new and exotic places she would visit, and felt instinctively that the world outside was awaiting her arrival, ready to dazzle her with new experiences. This conviction, coupled with her vivid imagination, contributed to her telling everybody the account of her meeting Danny Casey, the star player. The title of the short story has a dual meaning - indicating a an upward mobility or general affluent lifestyle which Sophie's family cannot afford, also how Sophie imaginatively transcends that obstacle.

Answer 2: Sophie dreamt of opening a boutique or becoming an actress or a fashion designer. She thought that she would be offered the position of a manager and that she would work there till the time she saves enough money for her boutique.

Answer 3: When Sophie went to look for him, Geoff was tinkering with one of his motorcycle parts over a piece of newspaper spread out on the carpet. He was sitting with a frown on his face, looking at the motorcycle component as if it were a mute animal and he was waiting for it to speak to him.   Geoff was older than Sophie and more mature, being three years out of school. Being generally of a silent nature, it was difficult to know what he was thinking, although Sophie suspected that her brother already had had  experiences which she had only dreamt about. However, from his rational matter-of-fact manner, it could be inferred that he might not have been of the same imaginative bent as his sister.

Answer 6: Geoff scarcely spoke voluntarily. It was a tedious task to make him speak. After three years of passing out from school, he was almost a grown up. Sophie was extremely jealous of him now because he mostly kept silent and to her, this silence signified that his mind is wandering in some distant places. She felt a fascination for these unknown areas but the realisation, that she could never gain access to those areas of his mind, made her jealous.

Answer 10: Sophie did not want Jansie to know about her meeting with Danny Casey as she had made up the story just to have a conversation with her brother and wanted to keep it between the siblings only. She was afraid that Jansie would tell everyone about her date with Danny Casey.
