The words flux comes from a Latin  word meaning "to flow"
and in electrostatics it is proportional to the the total number of lines of force passing through a surface perpendicularly,
initially we used to say flux is the total number of lines of force passing through a surface perpendicularly but suppose if flux came 4.5 than we cant explain 4 and half electric field line are crossing, its little senseless


mathematically flux calculated as

flux =  =  E. A where  A  = area vectorord =  E. dA   =  E. dA 

its unit is volt-metre  or  Nm2C
