European artists who came to India brought new style of paintings to India:

a. European artists brought with them the idea of realism and the technique of oil painting.

b. These paintings depicted the power of the British rule that sought to modernize and civilize India's decaying culture.
c.
 Portraits of authority were basically symbolic of dominance, power that the ruler wielded.
d. Colonial portraits for example, were large size images that it was symbolic of British authority.
e. The new style of portraiture also served as an ideal means of displaying the lavish lifestyles, wealth and status that the empire generated. For example,  picture of Clive street in Calcutta 

f. These new style of paintings depicted the superiority of the British and showed Indians in a submissive position.
g. Here we may give example of painting of 
The Aurial and Dashwood Families of Calcutta​  Johann Zoffany.
​h. The  painting depicted British victory, power , affluence and lavish lifestyle.
i. The painting shows Indians as servants serving tea to the whites.
 j. The painting rather shows Indians in a subjugated , submissive, inferior position.
k. You may also notice in these paintings Indians are always in the background and not in the centre.
