In western countries such as France, the concept of secularism is understood in the terms as religion is a private affair. The religion must not be practised or religious preferences revealed in public space.
As against this, in India secularism means that recognising and understanding that there are multiple religions that coexists peacefully in the country. The people in the country are free to practise or propagate any religion they wish in the public space as well.
