Kolkata has developed due to Ganga. River Ganga has become the support system of Kolkata by providing water for drinking, bathing, washing, dumping of wastes, religious rituals etc.It is a means of transportation and trading as well.​The river brought down silt from the mountains, and deposited it  along the plains making the soil fertile for agriculture.
