A vertebrate is an animal with a backbone (spine) and an invertebrate has no backbone, usually it has an exoskeleton.
General features of vertebrates are-
- Notochord is present only in the embryonic stage.
- In adults, the notochord is replaced by a vertebral column consisting of ring-like bones called vertebrae.
- They have a muscular heart with two, three, or four chambers.
- They are bilaterally symmetrical and triploblastic. The body cavity is enterocoelom.
- They have paired gill pouches.
- In humans the notochord is present only at the time of embryonic development which later differentiates into a vertebral column.
- They have a well-developed skull and spinal cord inside the hollow vertebrae and a very complex nervous system running throughout the body.
- Thus, humans are vertebrates.
