Are the oxidation state and covalency of Al in [AlCl(H2O)6]2+ same??

The oxidation state of Cl is -1.Let us suppose that oxidation state of Al is x.

 

therefore, x - 1 + 6 x 0 = + 2

or,  x = + 3

 

Thus, the oxidation state of Al is +3.

 

Since, six ligands (which can donate a pair of electrons), i.e., H2O molecules are attached to the aluminium atom, therefore, its covalency is 6.

Your Question is wrong its supposed to be [AlCl(H2O)5]+2 not [AlCl(H2O)6]+2

The number of ligands in the coordinate complex( i.e. [AlCl(H2O)5]+2 ) would be six altogether

i.e.  Al and Cl would form a bond and the 5 water molecules would form a weak bond with Al which is the central atom. Therefore the total number of bonds would be six .......

Since, six ligands (which can donate a pair of electrons), i.e., H2O molecules are attached to the aluminium atom, and total charge is +2 therfore in last shell it has 6*2 +1(after subtracting 2 from 3 valence e) and +1(cl) = 14e hence covalency = 14/2=7
