Can any1 explain about CHORIONIC VILLI SAMPLING !!!!!!!

Dear student,

Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is a prenatal test (performed before the baby is born) to screen the baby for genetic problems like cystic fibrosis, or Down's syndrome etc.

During pregnancy, the placenta provides oxygen and nutrients to the foetus and also removes waste products from the baby's blood. The chorionic villi are projections of placental tissue that share the genetic makeup of the growing foetus, thereby making detection of genetic defects possible.

In CVS, a sample of chorionic villi is removed from placenta. This can be done via the cervix (transcervical) or through the abdomen (transabdominal). This test can be performed as early as 10 weeks of pregnancy.

It also has certain risks like miscarriage, infection etc.

CVS can be done through the cervix

(transcervical) or through the belly (transabdominal). ... A small sample of chorionic villus (placental) tissue is then removed. The transabdominal procedure is performed by inserting a needle through the abdomen and uterus and into the placenta.
