Gaston, in this play, has been shown to be a very straightforward person. At the beginning we see how clearly he mentions that he is by no way interested in spending a fortune on buying a villa in which his wife’s parents could stay. He is also an opportunist as he takes advantage of the situation to break a great deal and earn a hundred thousand francs of it. He earns this huge profit which shows that he is a better and cleverer business man than Juliette.

Juliette seems like a very hard core business woman who does not budge an inch in her decision of selling the villa and its price. She, at the beginning of the play, seems like a very helpless woman who is in dire need of money and wants to sell the house immediately. However, being a firm person is just the superficial part of who she actually was as we find her to be very gullible when she decides in an instant to sell the house to Jeanne and Gaston. She acts like a fool when she trusts the two buyers and sells the house without giving it a second thought as to why someone who was so disinterested in buying at the first place, was suddenly so eager to strike a deal.

Jeanne is a nice lady who is very gullible although she tried to rebel against her husband. She knows the value of relationships and emotions. She is exactly the opposite of her husband who is cunning and opportunist. She is very eager to buy the house for her parents. This shows that she was very caring towards her family and wanted everybody to live peacefully and comfortably. Her conversations with Juliette show that she was kind hearted and friendly as well.
