Martha Washington, a coloured young girl was companion to Helen in childhood. She was the child of the cook and elder to Helen. Helen and Martha shared their love for mischief. In their innocent fun Martha once cut off Helen's curly lock. Martha despite being mischievous was submissive to Helen's orders and tantrums. She was one of the early companions who understood Helen's sign Language and her silent wishes. She was support and and friend to Helen in her early years.
