carbon does not form ionic compounds. why?

  • -6

because it is tetravalent

  • -9

carbon has valency 4 to attend noble gas configuration it need to gain or lose 4 electrons so that it would form ionic compound

1.if it gain 4 electrons it would be difficult for nucleus to hold 6 protons on to 10 electrons.

2.if it lose 4 electrons it would require lot of energy tolose 4 electrons from nucleus holding 6 protons on to just 2 electrons.

Thus carbon doesnt form ionic compounds.

ionic compounds are those which are formed as a result of ionic bonds between the elements of the compound.

eg:-

NaCl (sodium chloride) is an ioic compound formed due to ionic bond between sodium and chlorine.

carbon cannot form an ionic bond

there are 4 electrons in the outermost shell and 6 protons in its nucleus.

if it forms more than 3 bonds with an atom, it will form an ionic bond and complete its octet.

but it cannot gain or lose electrons.

if it gains 4 electrons, it would be difficult for the nucleus with six protons to hold on to ten electrons, that is, four extra electrons.

if it loses 4 electrons, it would require a large amount of energy to remove 4 electrons leaving behind a carbon cation with six protons in its nucleus holding on to just 2 electrons.

carbon overcomes this problem by sharing its valence electrons with other atoms of carbon or with atoms of other elements.

..carbon sirf covalent compound ki banata hai...ionic kaise bnayega yaar..ionic mein toh electrons lose ya gain hotey hain...carbon ki toh valecy ki 4 hai..it cant evern lose or gain...

To get a stable octet by ionic bonding, carbon would have to either lose 4electronsor gain 4 electrons. Either process would take way too much energy. Well, there might be an exception. Some studies suggest that Al4C3 (aluminium carbide) contains Al3+ and C4- ions. Normally, however, it just wouldn't work.

The atomic no. Of carbon is 6 so configuration is 2,4. Carbon has 4 electons in its outer most shell and needs to gain or loose 4 electrons to attain nobel gas configuration. If it gain 4 e forming anion of 4 -ve than it'd be difficult for nucleus yo accommodate 10 e and ~ if it loose forming cation of 4+ve than there'd be 2 electron left. Therefore, it doesn't form ionic bond
