There were two anthems. Blacks sung 'Die Stem' and whites sung 'Nkosi Sikelel- iAfrika'.
The above lines mean that when both the groups were singing their respective anthems, they both were not knowing its lyrics as they had a very low opinion of these anthems. But soon they will learn the words of the anthems and will be able to sing it confidently.
