Chapter- The Seven Ages

"Then a soldier
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour , sudden & quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth."

(a)why is the soldier compared to a pard?

(b)describe the characteristics of a soldier?

(c)why has the reputation been described as 'bubble'? What is ironical about a solider dying for it?

Dear Student,
(a) Soldier is compared to a pard because a leopard is quick in everything and a soldier too is like that, he wants to make mark in his life.
(b) A soldier swears solemnly; he is sporty like a leopard. He is jealous in honour, so he rashly enters into quarrels with others as e seeks to win honour and reputation which are as short lived as a bubble of water.
(c) The reputation that a soldier seeks to win has been described to a bubble because it is as short lived as a bubble of water. The irony about a soldier dying for this reputation is that it takes him years to seek this reputation and honour but it gets blowed away in seconds, with one wrong action, just like a bubble does.
