Character sketch of Gibbons

Gibbons was an amateur naturalist of the district, who while lying out in a spacious open downs without another soul in sight, as he had thought, and almost dozing, heard the sound of a man coughing, sneezing and then swearing savagely to himself. When he looked up, there was no one in sight but the voice was indisputable. Gibbons had heard nothing of the incidents related to the Invisible Man so he was quite befuddled as to the strange occurrence. The phenomenon was so striking and disturbing that his philosophical tranquillity vanished, he got up hastily and hurried down the steepness of the hill towards the village as fast as he could carry himself.
