They learned arithmetic, geography and history. The school was in the home itself: for Margie, it was right next to her bedroom. They studied alone and had no classmates. Margie’s teacher switched on at the same time daily except Saturday and Sunday. Her mother felt little girls learned better if they had regular hours.

The old kind of school had kids from the entire neighbourhood coming together, laughing and shouting in the schoolyard. They would sit together in the classroom and go home together at the end of the day. They would learn the same things and could help one another with the homework. Also, the teachers were people, making the learning process more interactive. They had books and notebooks instead of screens and typed lessons.
