Could you please explain the underlined lines ?

Dear Student,

Please find the meaning of the underlined sentences below:

1. The heart beat rate determines the number of times a heart beats to pump blood in the body.

2. The small animals have a higher heart rate and large animals have a slower heart rate; i.e. the heart rate is inversely proportional to the size of the animal.

3. This can be explained on the grounds of surface area to volume ratio of the animals. Animals with small size have a small volume but large surface area whereas large animals have large volume but small surface area.

4. The heart needs to work more to pump blood in blood vessels having larger surface area i.e. small size and thus need to pump more frequently to supply blood in the entire body . And vice versa in large animals the surface area of blood vessels is less and the work to be done by heart is also less and thus, it beats at a slower rate
