Dear Student, 
The intermediate directions are like North-East (NE),South- East (SE), South- West (SW),North-West (NW).  These are halfway between any two cardinal directions. These are mainly used to determine the exact location of any place. These are fabricated on different maps and compasses. It is used by drivers, pilots, ships to follow travel routes.
