1. a) According to Juliette, a lady was going to come an see her house, before purchasing it. Juliette did not want the lady to think that she was desperate to sell the house. In order to create an "impression" that Juliette was quite well-off and that she wanted to sell the house for personal reasons, she went upstairs. When the lady would come, the maid would have to go upstairs to call Juliette, which subsequently would give an "impression" of affluence.
b) In reality Juliette was hard on money, but did want to sell the house at a loss. Although, she had kept the price at a paltry thousand francs, she did not want to display her financial crisis to the  visitors who came to see her house. This displays certain amount of business acumen in Juliette. However, it also reflects on the fact that Juliette is also a little vain and wanted people to think that she could afford servants, in spite of the fact that she needed money.

2. Gaston was aware that his wife wanted to buy a villa for her parents. He told her plainly, without mincing his words, that although Jeanne insisted the villa would be for herself and Gaston, in reality she wanted to purchase it for her parents.

3. Mrs. Al Smith wondered at the manner the French people carried out business transactions. She was under the notion that Gaston was the owner of the house. However, when he could provide a price quotation for the house she was surprised. She was surprised that the owner is desperate to sell the house, but when asked about the price he is completely taken aback. She generalizes Gaston's nonchalant behavior as, "You french people have a cute way of doing business!"
