Dear Experts,
I previously requested an answer to the question "Give a character sketch of Lord Munodi to satisfy 10 marks"
The answer one of yourteam provided barely satisfies 2-3 marks.
Please give me a satisfactory answer this time.
As well to the other question about the rational existence of the Houyhnmhnm.
Regards,
Siddharth (in hope you give something in 200-300 words)

Hi Siddhart,
Please find below the solution to your query.

Lord Munodi is a minor character who is in stark contrast to the Laputins. He is a character that stands out amongst all the laputins due to his rational and practical nature. It is due to this reason that he is an important character, albeit minor. His treatment towards gulliver is in sharp contrast to the treatment meted by the other scornful laputins. He is warm and kind and is rendered almost helpless in a society that is indoctrinated with useless logic.
There are certain parallels between Gulliver and Lord Munodi. They both are alienated from the societies they belong to. Though Gulliver's alienation is apparent as he is physically removed from his society, Lord Mundi has internalised his alienation as he is a stranger amongst his own. Being limited to his own estate, he tries to run it as rationally as possible, without any airs as is evident from the tour he gives to Gulliver. He is the perfect example of a fine gentleman with the correct balance of humbleness, generosity and knowledge.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to provide a 200 words answer to this question as he is a minor character with limited presence in the novel. I have tried to cover all the aspects of his personality that get highlighted in the text.

  • Lord Munodi is the one sensible man in all of Laputa.
  •  Lord Munodi belongs to an extremely important family with a large estate on Balnibarbi, which is the only thing that keeps him from being totally thrown out of Laputa.
  • He has been the Governor of Balnibarbi for some years
  • He welcomes Gulliver in his house and entertains him hospitably
  • His country house and lands are the only places which impress Gulliver
  • He is able to think critically which surprises Gulliver because the others seem think and act in the opposite way.
  • His house is nobly built and his fields are full of good corn and enclosed within the yards.
  • He is despised by the King and his court for not adopting new and experimental modes of managing his family estates along with everyone else.
  • Lord Munodi's good sense and old-fashioned ways make him an excellent companion for Gulliver.
  • It is Lord Munodi who manages to get a guide for Gulliver through the Royal Academy in Lagado, much to Gulliver's interest.
