The title "Deep water" is significant because it is a story about the author's fear of water and how he overcomes it.

Fear is one of our greatest weaknesses. The author was afraid of water. But after constant practice he was able to overcome this fear. Fear is an obstacle to success. Once we are able to overcome fear, we will be able to face any challenges comfortably.

1. in this chapter the author gives an autobiographical account of his childhood misadventure at the swimming pool. he reveals how as a young boy he was nearly drowned in a swimming pool. thereafter, he was gripped by the fear of water. he feared water so much that he avoided it, whenever he could. but he was determined to get rid of this fear. so he engaged a tutor to learn swim. gradually, the instructor built a swimmer out of author. slowly and steadily he overcome the fear of water. he swam in different lakes and seas to overcome the fear of water. thus, it signifies the author fear of water.

2. by this line roosevelt wants to say that fear is  a negative feeling and is great obstacle to our happiness and progress. we should not be afraid of it and try to overcome it with confidence, courage, hope and detemination. by sheer will power and optimism we can overcome it.
