DEFINE ANIMAL NUTRITION
animals cannot prepare thier own food so they are called heterotrophs. the heterotrophs feed on othher animals or plants. animals may be herbivorous, carnivorous ar omnivorous.
the processes of nutrition in animals are :
ingestion - it is the actual taking of food from the environment.
digestion - this is the breaking down of food into simpler and soluble compounds with the help of several substances called enzymes. enzymes are manufactured in various cells in our body.
absorption - it is the passing of the soluble and digested food into the blood stream.
assimilation - this is the final stage where the digested food is used up by the body as fuel.
another process in the animals is -
egestion - it is the process where the body gets rid of the undigested solid part of food.
the mode of nutrition in animals is holozoic nutrition. it is taken from a greek word - holos meaning whole and zoon meaning animal.
