Define briefly what is development.

Development is a broad concept which is inclusive of the increase in real per capita income, improvement in the standard of living of the people, reduction in poverty, illiteracy and crime rate. While different individuals and institutions have different developmental goals, national income is considered as a major contributor to the development. National income is usually defined as the total value of all goods and services that are produced in a country plus the net income that is obtained through exports to foreign countries. Thus, per capita income is calculated as national income/population. Development is a long-term process that creates growth, progress, positive impacts or the inclusion of physical, socio-economic, environmental, and demographic components. The main purpose of development is to increase the level and quality of life of the population, and the creation or expansion of local regional income and employment opportunities, without affecting or damaging the natural resources in the environment.
