Define residue.

In chemical terms, a residue can be defined as any substance which remains behind after a process, say evaporation, filtration or decantation.

Consider a case of salt in water system. The salt present is dissolved in the solvent i.e., water. Now, if this system is subjected to evaporation, the water will evaporate leaving behind salt. Here salt is the residue.
