Carbon has a valency of 4 so it is capable of bonding for other atoms of carbon or other some atoms of monovalent element this is known as tetravalency of carbon

The term tetravalency is defined for elements which have 4 valency i. e., an element gain 4 electron to attain noble gas configuration or loss 4 electron to attain noble gas configuration. However elements of group 14 in the modern periodic table have tetravalency property.
