Define the term magnification.What do you mean by positive and negative values of magnification? Write the formula for magnification of a mirror and a lens explaining the symbols used in the formula.

magnification produced by spherical mirror is given by the ratio of size of a image and the size of an object.

magnification=size of a image / size of an object

m=h'/h = -v/u

NOTE : m is -ve for real image but +ve for virtual image

hence, magnification for convex mirror is always +ve while for concave mirror it depends upon the nature of the image.

Magnification is the process of enlarging something only in appearance, not in physical size. This enlargement is quantified by a calculated number also called "magnification". When this number is less than one, it refers to a reduction in size, sometimes called "minification" or "de-magnification

A negative sign in the value of the magnification indicates that the image is real and A positive sign in the value of the magnification indicates that the image is virtual.
