Define the term Twilight existence of secrecy and rebellion. Why has Nelson Mandela's existence compared to that of Twilight?

Solution

The phrase twilight existence of secrecy and rebellion means living a life in obscurity, hiding from government officials as rebels.

Mandela believed that a man had two obligations, one towards his family and the other towards his country.  He said that in South Africa, a man who tried to fulfill his obligation to his country was forced to spend his life in prison away from his family. Mandela's life was then referred to be of a twilight existence where he would not even know whether it was day or night. It was a life in isolation and secrecy. Thus, Mandela referred to life during the time of freedom struggle as 'a twilight existence of secrecy and rebellion'.
