John A Pescud is a hypocrite as he made fun of romantic stories written in best sellers but on the other hand he himself he had a romantic marriage.you know, he followed Jessie by switching many trains, then landed in her hometown, met her father and wooed her in the style of any romantic hero in best sellers. Also he can be called romantic as he gets down at coke town, a deserted place only to get Jessie some petunias which she admired during their last trip to pittsburgh

First of all he is hypocrite. He does not believe in the story of the bestsellers even though he shares the same story. He is honest and truthful as he tells everything to Jessie's father - how he followed her from cincinnati, why is he here, his salary, his prospects.... everything. He is also caring as when they go to Chicago (am not sure where) Jessie likes the petunias and then he comes to coketown just to buy petunias for Jessie.
